GREAVES JAMS WINS NOTL PEEWEE CHAMPIONSHIP

Greaves Jams followed up their first place regular season finish by winning the NOTL Peewee Softball Championship.  They defeated a formidable Legion team 20 - 18 in what can only be described as a nailbiter.  After building up a sizeable lead in the sixth inning, Legion made things close scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh before James Franz struck out Jeremy McLelland, the regular season home run leader with two people left on base.  Danielle Martineau, Dustin McCoy and Zach Yakubiw all hit home runs for Greaves.  James Franz chipped in with 5 hits, Tory Krugel, Cody Stratton and Chris Doerwald each had 3 hits.  Kevin Tasson scored the eventual winning run sliding into home plate to avoid the tag.  Despite the score, there were some fine defensive gems by Greaves.  Dustin McCoy and Chris Doerwald made outstanding catches in the out field.  Danielle Martineau turned a critical double play and Tory Krugel made play after play.

Even though all players excelled during the regular season, a few players made outstanding contributions.  Zach Yakubiw and James Franz were chosen MVPs for their own team.  Dustin McCoy was chosen as most improved and Thea Wall was named most sportsman like.

United Way and Local Charities Can Take Advantage of On-line Donation Service

Charity begins at home and, now, online.

The Review has launched a new feature on its website which allows users to donate directly to charities.

As the Internet continues to play a larger role in overall communications, Review publisher Dave Martineau felt adding the capability to accept donations for community groups was a natural addition to the site.

“We want to be the community meeting place for everyone. We want to reflect every aspect of everyday life for everyone and offering charitable donations on our site is a great opportunity for us to do that,” he said.

Users can access the link on The Review’s web page at www.niagarafallsreview.ca and clicking on the “Charitable Donations” logo.

Fill out the required information on the secured site and hit the enter button and the funds are on their way to charity of your choice.

The united Way of Niagara Falls and Greater Fort Erie was the first charity to sign up.

“A lot of people in this day and age are more interested in doing things electronically so it’s great that we have this opportunity for people who are browsing on the site to give back to the united Way,” said Carol Stewart-Kirkby, united Way executive director.

Martineau hopes other charitable organizations will take advantage of the latest method to reach donors.

Whirlpool Jet Boats in Niagara are AWESOME!

The editors of Niagara.ca enjoyed a wonderful day in Niagara-on-the-Lake last Thursday. And, the highlight of our trip to NOTL was the Jet Boat Niagara Adventure!

Our 7pm departure on this hour long adventure began at the docks at the bottom of Melville Street in NOTL. There were four in our group, and only one person had the foresight to bring a change of clothes.

WET! WET! WET!
Life Preservers, Sweaters, Rain Coats (with Hoods), and even Shoe 'Booties' are all provided at no charge. But, even with all this gear, everyone on the Jet Boat gets absolutely drenched! There are no exceptions. Before departure, you pick where you want to sit. The front 'Power Rows' are the bumpiest, and the seats on the sides are supposed to be the 'wettest', but it doesn't matter where you sit. You are guaranteed to get wet!

Captain John!
Our skilled pilot was Captain John. He knew where to navigate the Jet Boat to ensure maximum waves and extreme fun. Jet-boating the Niagara River is an incredible experience, and the rapids are fantastic. Everyone loved the 'Hamilton 360' Turns (named after the manufacturer of the Hamilton Jet Engines), and the 'White Water Rapids'.

An Avalanche of Water!
It was a surprise to feel how warm the water is, when it 'slaps' you in the face. As you experience rapids and waves such as 'Flash Flood' and 'Big Kahuna', be prepared for an avalanche of water to come over the side of the Jet Boat, and soak everyone on-board!

Hold Your Breath!
When the water hits, be sure to hold your breath! Hundreds of gallons of water come crashing down on you, and an open mouth, or poorly timed 'inhale' will give you the full sensation of the power and magnitude of the roaring waves.

The experienced professional, Jay Cochrane, has submitted a bid to the Niagara Parks Commission. Jay seeks approval to take his high wire act across the Falls. (Currently, Jay uses Niagara Falls as a back-drop for his incredible show, but he does not walk across the Falls)

A Heated Debate!
Jay's proposal to cross the Falls on a wire has been a topic for much debate. Jay has already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in preparation for his proposal. But, Jay needs the final approval of the Niagara Parks Commission. Jay Cochrane is a trained professional, and his bid to cross the Falls on a wire has still not been approved.

Niagara Falls To Become A Year Round Destination

Since I began as Publisher of The Niagara Falls Review in November, I have been struck mainly by the passion of those that live there who continuously strive to develop Niagara Falls into a great city.

Niagara Falls has really begun to capitalize on what everyone knows is one of the Seven Wonders of The World.

Rather than accepting the fate of a declining or even obsolete economy with the disappearance of manufacturing jobs, the city, the province and local families are making (and it’s not done yet!) Niagara Falls a spectacular place to visit and live.

In the past decade, a magnificent skyline has ascended making it the admitted envy of its cross border neighbour, Niagara Falls, NY. This has only added to the wonderful attractions like Clifton Hill, Marineland, Lundy’s Lane, the many area wineries, The Shaw Festival and much more that make our city what it is – a diverse cultural haven.

Largely the city is a summer time destination but that will soon change with the much anticipated ground breaking of a proposed convention centre. The province has contributed $35 million, local businesses have contributed $15 million, the city has waived taxes and land development fees, the region has committed to renting 20 hectares of land at $1 per year for parking. The only announcement yet to come is $35 million from the Federal Government. Once this is built, Niagara Falls will be a year round destination.

While visitors are beginning to realize all that our great city has to offer, residents are taking advantage of this as well. Whether it’s fine dining overlooking the falls, a round of golf at any of the magnificent golf courses that rival the famous and finest, visiting the area wineries or just leisurely taking in the sights, those of us that live in this area are not taking it for granted. We are truly blessed to have all that is offered right here in our back yard.
